Dvorak’s setting of the 13th century poem Stabat Mater by the Franciscan Jacopone da Todi was a heartfelt response to the loss of all three of his children.
In it he combines the choral traditions of his Czech homeland, Baroque religiosity, Wagner's music dramas and Brahms' symphonies in a work of profound and solemn beauty.
Its huge sucess in 1880 led to the establishment of Dvorak's fame in England, quickly spreading to the rest of the Anglophone world.
